The Greek Society of Migraine and Headache Patients was founded in 2017. It is a non-profit organization and it is member of the Pain Alliance Europe and European Migraine & Headache Alliance. Our central offices are located in Athens, Greece.
In Greece, migraine patients are estimated to 1.000.000. An additional currently undetermined number of citizens suffers from other headaches as cluster headache or tension type headache. Many patients are still undiagnosed and even diagnosed patients are often undertreated.
In spite of persistent efforts to inform patients and public opinion about headaches and medical developments, most of the population is unaware of up- to-date data. Medical education on the subject also needs to be intensified, as the headache and migraine patients are often treated by doctors with inadequate training on the subject.
Over the years, medicine has made great strides in dealing with migraines and headaches both in symptomatic and in preventive treatment. New, sophisticated and with less side effects medicines are at hand and promise to relieve sufferers to a great extent. Our association aims to take actions so that access to those who are entitled to this treatment is unobstructed.
The founding members of the society are patients from all over Greece who suffer from migraines or headaches. Their aim is to make known to the public what migraine and headaches is, improve their situation and gain a better quality of life. In addition, their top priority is to claim patients' rights such as access to appropriate medical structures and proper pharmaceutical therapies.
The main axes of action of our society are:
- To inform and educate sufferers, the general public, health professionals and state officials on headaches and treatment options.
- To promote socialization of patients along with activation and participation in decisions concerning their health problem.
- To develop Research Tools and provide Education.
- To support claim of patients’ legitimate rights.
In this respect, our society during its first year of operation (2018) has carried out the following actions, among others.
- Has conducted two substantial information events on migraine, in Athens and in Thessaloniki, with an active presence of more than 300 migraine patients; while the videos of the events had more than 7000 views οn social media.
- Has had an active presence and has put pressure on all involved parties (ministry, pharmaceutical companies) as far as the lack of drugs used in the treatment of migraine headaches or other headaches is concerned.
- A survey questionnaire has been conducted with more than 1100 migraine fellow citizens’ participations. Data on migraine in our country were collected and will be published in the press and medical press as well.
